Noom lays off more employees amid CFO departure (TECHCRUNCH)
Noom has laid off 10% of its staff, or around 500 people, which is a reduction that mostly impacts its coaching team. It’s the second layoff impacting Noom’s coaching team in a matter of months, impacting hundreds of employees. Sources say that Noom has nearly halved its number of coaches since the beginning of the year, which looks to currently be around 1,000 coaches.
Cowan has been working as IPON’s head since least late summer, multiple sources confirmed to BetaKit. Those sources, who asked to remain anonymous as they’re not allowed to speak publicly on the matter, noted that Cowan has been taking meetings with members of the ecosystem for several weeks.

Alberta tech CEOs sign letter claiming restrictions over “software engineer” title hampering province’s talent gains (BETAKIT)
Companies and startups have written Premier Danielle Smith protesting the “aggressive position” the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) has taken over the title of software engineer.
The some 30-plus signatories of the letter contend that APEGA is unnecessarily regulating the designation of software engineer and has made the position subject to “onerous, restrictive, and unnecessary certification requirements.”
The retail giant Tuesday said the Walmart Healthcare Research Institute is designed to increase community access to the latest “interventions and medications” that can make a difference for “older adults, rural residents, women and minority populations” considered underrepresented.
In particular, the Institute’s early focus will be on making sure these populations will be included in studies on treatments for chronic conditions and other diseases.
Brave Health nabs $40M to scale up virtual mental health services for Medicaid members (FIERCE HEALTHCARE)
Brave Health, a virtual-first behavioral health provider focused on serving Medicaid populations, has rapidly grown in the past three years. The startup now serves over 65 million covered lives across more than 200 health plan contracts in 18 states.
Combined with the 35 startups named to Communitech’s initial list, which was published in June, the tech hub has now identified a total of 61 privately-held Canadian tech firms on the path to hitting $1 billion in annual revenue, based on each company’s current annual revenue and growth rate.
On Thursday, the startup announced that it had raised $25 million in a growth capital round led by SEMCAP Health. The behavioral health integration software provider has now raised about $57 million to date, Adam Pardes, co-founder and COO, said in an interview.
Redesign Health lays off 67 employees in ‘restructuring move’ (MOBIHEALTH NEWS)
After raising $65 million in a Series C round approximately one month ago, Redesign Health, a company that builds, launches and finds funding for other healthcare startups, is laying off 67 employees, or roughly 20% of its workforce.
