Winnipeg-based food delivery tech firm SkipTheDishes announced the appointment of a new CEO, Howard Migdal.

Previously the company’s COO, Migdal takes over from Kevin Edwards, who recently announced his retirement.

Migdal brings over 16 years of experience in food delivery to his new role at SkipTheDishes. He was one of two entrepreneurs who founded GrubCanada, which claims to be the country’s first national food delivery platform. He spent the last four years leading SkipTheDishes in the roles of COO and managing director.

Kevin Edwards led the firm for nearly five years, taking over from SkipTheDishes’ founders in 2018.

As CEO, Migdal’s priority will be continuing to find ways to help restaurants and local businesses thrive in today’s on-demand economy while maintaining SkipTheDishes’ industry leadership across the country.

Amid the economic downturn, SkipTheDishes laid off 350 employees in September, with its parent company Just Eat Takeaway citing the need to ensure sustainable growth. With a staff of more than 3,000 employees, the cuts accounted for approximately 11 percent of SkipTheDishes’ workforce.

Edwards led the firm for nearly five years, taking over from SkipTheDishes’ founders in 2018. He helped steer the company through the COVID-19 pandemic, and launched SkipTheDishes’ official grocery and convenience vertical, Skip Express Lane.

“I’m grateful to have spent the final four years of my career with SkipTheDishes,” said Edwards. “Our team is unstoppable and I know they’ll continue blazing the trail within the Canadian delivery space.”

Migdal noted that he wanted to continue to ensure SkipTheDishes was the platform of choice when businesses and consumers wanted delivery. “We look forward to continuing to drive success for our most important stakeholders across Canada: our customers, couriers, and restaurant partners,” he said.

SkipTheDishes was founded in Saskatoon in 2012. United Kingdom-based Just Eat acquired the company in 2016 for $110 million. Just Eat merged with fellow major food delivery company Takeaway.com in 2020. Today, the combined company owns around 13 food delivery companies globally, including Grubhub and Foodora.
